Show moreThe map dates from the time when Qatar was beginning to be shown as a clearly delineated peninsular formation. Before 1827-1835 the northern coast of Arabia was little explored and was shown as a smooth curve although occasionally the island of Bahrain was depicted. Here Qatar begins to emerge as a peninsula though it would be a few years before its true shape was depicted on maps. The map shows the pearling banks around Qatar and marks the location of the famous pearling town of Zubarah (Zebarra) in Qatar as well as Ras Rakan (Ras Reccan). Major towns and caravan routes are shown throughout. The desert of the Empty Quarter is shown as genuinely empty rather than filled with fanciful places as with earlier 17th and 18th century maps of Arabia. Relief is shown by hachures. dressée par M. Show moreWilliam Home Lizars (1788-1859) Lizars was a Scottish engraver and painter and the son of the engraver Daniel Lizars. This map appears identical to the one his father Daniel engraved for the "Edinburgh geographical and historical Atlas" published by John Hamilton in 1831. It is plate 47 of the atlas. Relief is shown by hachures. The map shows towns and other settlements, oases, caravan routes, etc, Qatar is marked on the map as Catura and a hint of the Qatar peninsula can be seen on the map. Previously this region of the northern shore of Arabia was depicted as flat and it had only begun to be mapped at the very time of the publication of the original map made by Daniel Lizars. The pearl banks in the region of Qatar are also labeled. published by W. Lizars, Edinburgh. "XLVII" appears in upper left corner. From: The Edinburgh geographical and historical atlas, 1831.
