Relief shown by hachures. Covers part of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Israel. Shows explorer's sea routes. Prime meridian: Paris. "P." A complete set of the six volume Atlas Universel in original bindings of half red leather teal cloth covered boards with title "Vandermaelen. Atlas Universel..." embossed in gold on the spine. This monumental work was the first atlas of the world with all maps on the same scale (and a large scale at that - about one inch to 26 miles) and the first lithographed world atlas. If all the maps were joined together they would form a globe of 7.75 meters in diameter (such a globe was made in Brussels). The maps were published originally in parts of ten maps each, beginning in 1825 and ending in 1827. Vandermaelen's maps are frequently misunderstood because each map is usually best comprehended in the context of its neighboring maps - the maps do not function well on their own, since they were all meant to be joined. Koeman states that "His atlases, although unique in concept and size did not possess that fine touch of cartographic style which make them attractive for a collector..." We strongly disagree - the graphic art of the maps must be appreciated in the context of lithography, a developing art at the time; as lithographs, they are very well done. For many of the areas depicted, these maps are the largest scale maps made at the time, and the most detailed (particularly in the American West). Maps are hand painted in outline color. Show morePhillipe Buache (1700-1773) was one of the most prominent geographers of the 18th century at a time Paris was a center for cartography. He was the preeminent student of the French cartographer Guillaume de l'Isle (16751726) and went on to marry his daughter and inherit his workshop upon De l'Isles death. Buache was known for his theoretical work in physical geography. This map was based upon a presentation to the Academie de Sciences in 1744 though it was published some ten years later. Buache was significant for formulating a theory about the importance of watersheds in physical geography. This map is an illustration of that theory. Note the systems of mountain ranges forming basins that the rivers flow out of and into the ocean. The map is indicative of a careful scientific mind, note for exapmle that the continent of Australia is only delineated according to the latest discoveries and left in an unfinished state. The Paris Meridian is demarcated on the map though it uses the earlier Ferro meridian as its prime meridian. This map was engraved by F. Desbruslins in 1757. dréssée et présentée à l'Acad. le 5 septbre. 1744 par Ph. Buache ; gravé par Desbruslins, Pere. 1757. De judiciis nativitatum liber unus, antehac non editus. Epistola nuncupatoria Ioachim Helleri Leucopetraei ad clarissimum virum D. Philippum Melanthonem. Nuremberg, Ioannes Montanus & Ulric Neuber, 1549. 1€l(b)+1tit.+1 +24+21+1 with woodcut border at head of title, large woodcut vignette on last leaf, woodcut initials, and diagrams in text; extensive contemporary annotations; modern vellum. The second edition (first 1546) of Abu Ali al-Khayyat's Kitab al-Mawalid as translated to Latin by Johannes Hispalensis (John of Seville). "[The author's] fame in mediaeval Europe stems from the K. al-Mawalid, a work on judicial astrology which also contains horoscopes for illness, frequent citations from Ptolemy and Hermes on the pars fortunae, etc. Two Latin translations were made of it, one by Plato of Tivoli (Plate Tiburtinus) at Barcelona in 1136, and the other by Seville in 1153; the latter translation was printed in Nuremberg (1546, 1549)" (EI) The translator, Johannes Hispalensis, was "the chief and most voluminous translator of astrological works from Arabic into Latin in the twelfth century. [His trnaslations] remained in use during the later middle ages and many of them appeared in print in early editions" (Thorndike, II, p. 73). Joachim Heller was a leading member of the circle of the celebrated Humanist and Reformer Philip Melanchthon, to whom the preface of this edition is Albohali is addressed. Heller explains Albohali's method, and states that the work is published from a manuscript which was once in the library of King Mathias of Hungary. El, IV, p. 1162; Sezgin, VII, pp. 120-21.
