Show moreFirst edition of a miscellaneous work on Alchemy which gathers some works of different authors, being Gebri, Jābir ibn Ḥayyān, considered the father of the Arab chemistry, the author who opens the volume which includes parts of four of his works. His treatises are followed by a short one, Speculum Alchemiae, traditionally credited to Roger Bacon, on the origin and composition of metals; a work by Richardus Anglicus; and another treatise of the Arab author Khalid ibn Yazid al-Umawi. The volume ends with the Tabula Smaragdina and its comment. The Tabula Smaragdina is a concise, compact and cryptic piece reputed to contain the secret of the prima materia and its transmutation, highly regarded by European alchemists as the foundation of their art. It is attributed to Hermes Trimegistus but, virtually all literature ascribed to this name is incorrectly so attributed. Although technically it is not the name of a real person in origin, it became regarded as such from early times. This text was a popular summary of alchemical principles, wherein the secrets of the philosopher's stone were thought to have been described. The last text of the whole edition is a commentary by the medieval alchemist Hortulanus, who composed his commentary before 1325. It is the second part of a work in which Hortulanus believes alcohol or quintessence is the hidden primordial heat in all material things. Show moreThis volume collects several woks on medecine, being the first that of 'Abu Zakariyya' Yuhanna Ibn Masawayh, known as Mesue Yuhanna Ibn Masawayh (C.777-857), one of the great name of Islamic medicine. He was personal physician to the abbasid Caliphs al-Ma'mun, al-Mutasim, al-Wathiq and al-Mutawakkil, and spent most of his life in baghdad and Samarra. He contributed to the translating activities of the famous Bayt al-Hikma; and Hunayn ibn Ishaq, the most influential of the traslators of Greek scientific texts, was his pupil. Despite his distinction, much of Ibn Masawayh's writing has not reached us. Just a handful of his text are extant in Arabic. More has been preserved in Latin Translation, though the attribution of some text to an elder as opposed to a younger Mesue has given the false impression thar there was more than one Ibn Masawayh. It is followed by a well-known work by Francisco de Pedemontium and the Antidotarium of Nicolaus Salernitarum. The last work on medecine is from Abulkasim. Antidotarium Nicolai. With title-page printed in red and black and decorated with Halma's engraved Athena and Demeter/Ceres device, a woodcut tailpiece, 3 woodcut decorative initials (3 different series) and a factotum built up from cast fleurons. With the main text in Arabic with a parallel Latin translation on the facing pages, and occasional words or lines in Greek, Hebrew and Syriac. Early 19th-century boards covered with blue paper. First edition of the apocryphal Arabic Infancy Gospel, with the Arabic text on the versos and the Latin translation on the facing rectos. Sike (or Siecke), a noted orientalist from Bremen, based his edition on a manuscript that was formerly owned by Jacobus Golius, and the many notes include exerpts from the Quran and other works. The work narrates miracle stories from the first 12 years of Jesus's life, and probably originated in the fourth or fifth century. Although scholars refer to the text as the "Arabic Infancy Gospel", it was most likely originally written in Syriac. First quires with some water stains, the title-page slightly worn and the head margin of a couple pages trimmed to (but not shaving) the running head, but still in good condition Title page printed in black and red.
