Abdelkader ibn Muhieddine, also known as al-Jazairi, was an Algerian commander and a political leader who fought in North Africa, Syria, and Lebanon against the French. In 1860, during the civil war between Druzes and Maronites of Mount Lebanon, sheltered large numbers of Christians from the massacres. For the respect that the Abdelkader used to show to his prisoners, he was admired not only by his people but also by the Europeans. Prince Albert Edward wanted to meet him during his stay in Damascus and it is probably on that occasion Francis Bedford took his portrait., Title and date from item.
