The woman in the photograph could be Gertrude Bell. Soon after obtaining her degree in 1898 she travelled many times in Middle East and the Arabian Peninsula and published her account of those experiences in numerous books. After the eruption of World War I, she was recruited by British Intelligence; her political connections and the trust she had earned among the Arabs played a decisive role in the success of the Arab Revolt. She took active part in the post war reshaping of the modern Middle East, especially in relation to the Iraqi nation and heritage., Title and date devised by Library staff.
