The album is an account of the journeys to Egypt and Palestine done by Maxime Du Camp between 1849 and 1851. Appointed by the French Ministry of Education, he travelled with the famous orientalist writer Gustave Flaubert. For Du Camp photography was not a mean of personal expression but rather an instrument of for exact reconstructions. Also an original aspect of his work such as the use of a Nubian man was essentially a measure of scale. This work is the first photographically illustrated travel book. First quality handmade salted prints made from wet paper negatives (Blanquart-Evrard process) are pasted on paper, captioned and tipped in the text., Title and date from item. the album includes explanatory text and plans of Karnak, Philae and Medinet Habou.
