This book is a record of the activities of the Victorian traveller Zouch H. Turton through Europe, Spain Italy, and Africa from 1875-6. The information is presented in 20 chapters which range in subject, beginning with the journey from London to the Spanish frontier, and followed by Turtons excursions through Spain, Tunisia, and Italy. Turton makes observations about his various modes of travel and about the layout of the towns which he visits. There is a particular focus on the architecture of the places he passes through, with reflections on the art and character of earlier civilisations. Details are given about the types of weather encountered and the length of the journeys between the various places. The book concludes with a chapter about the itemised finances of the trip, which lasted 283 days. Turton offers advice to travellers about the weight and content of their luggage, and how to cope with the challenges of travelling abroad., Zouch H. Turton. |
