Avctore Richardo Mead ... Hvic accessit Rhazis, medici inter Arabas celeberrimi, de iisdem morbis commentarivs., (RHAZES). MEAD, Richard. De variolis et morbillis liber. Huic accessit RHAZIS de iisdem morbis commentarius. London, John Brindley, 1747.8vo, 1 l(b) + 1(half t.) + 1 + 1t + 1 + 12(pref.) + 197p + 3 + 1 l, faint stamp on half-title; a good copy in old vellum, new end-papers.This is the first edition of Mead's work on smallpox and measles, which "includes a Latin translation of Rhazes' work. Mead favoured inoculation, and his great authority and influence helped towards a more general acceptance of this measure" (Garrison-Morton). Garrison remarks that Rhazes' account is so vivid and complete that it seems almost modern. Certainly for Mead in the eighteenth century it was current enough, and even today it may be studied for its clinical value as well as its historical interest.Blake p. 295; Choulant p. 342; Garrison-Morton 5417; Osler 3365 and 456; Waller 6397., "Rhazis De variolis et morbillis commentarivs, ex arabico latine redditus" (p. [97]-197) translated by Thomas Hunt. |
