This is Ortelius uncommon first map of the Turkish Empire only used from 1570 until 1579. This is the best known of all the sixteenth-century maps of the Middle East, extending from Greece to Arabia and covering the Cradle of Civilization region. The Red Sea (Mare de Mecca) is shown relatively accurately whereas the Persian Gulf (Mare Elcatif) is misshapen due to the exaggerated Arabian shoreline. The map includes Egypt, Israel, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Greece. Based upon Gastaldi's wall map of Asia from 1567. He is also believed to be the first person to imagine that the continents were joined together before drifting to their present positions.
