<note>in 1835 the author was chief surgeon of the Army of the Orient and a member of the Commission des Sciences et Arts. Most of the work deals with the plague, which was the most serious problem Desgenettes had to face. He went so far as to inoculate himself with bubo pus to prove to the soldiers that the plague was not contagious, so as to keep up their morale and prevent panic. Desgenettes has also written a number of pamphlets on Egyptian diseases and their treatment. Bibliographic references: Blackmer 478 for first edition; Hilmy I, 182.</note>
