<note>First edition, very clean throughout. The Swiss architect Fossati (1809-83) worked in Russia for a while before coming to Constantinople in 1838 as architect to the Russian court. After building the Russian embassy, he in 1845 entered the service of the Sultan, for whom he restored the Hagia Sophia. The "description historique des planches" was edited from Fossati's notes by the vicomte Adalbert de Beaumont. - Wants plates 3 (nave of Ayasofya Mosque, facing east; with groups of men in traditional dress) and 19 (exterior view of Ayasofya Mosque, courtyard of mausoleums in the foreground; with groups of men and women in traditional dress), but includes facsimiles thereof. A good copy.</note>
