Full-length seated portrait of four pilgrims from Pontianak, the capital of Indonesian province of West Kalimantan, on the island of Borneo. The man on the left is described as an Arab from Hadhramaut (a region in South Arabia, mostly in present-day eastern Yemen, and part in Western Oman and Southern Saudi Arabia, who lived in Pontianak. They sit face forward on foldable chairs, looking towards the camera. The photograph was taken by Snouck Hurgronje in Jeddah between 1884 and 1885. The men are photographed in a courtyard-like space with plants – some in wide wooden pots – foliage and a window, fronted by bars, visible in the background.
