The East India Company was the predominant economic force in the Indian subcontinent until the mid-Nineteenth Century, and John Richardson was well aware that his Arabic grammar would prove invaluable for the companys use in these areas. The grammar provides a clear introduction to the basic features of the language in this period, describing the details of vowels, consonants, nouns, gender, and other technical aspects in a detailed fashion before providing examples of the sentences. The focus is on formal Arabic throughout, and the examples of the languages use in context are relatively limited. The works concern with grammar and syntax is intended to give the reader a thorough grounding in order to be able to understand the extracts from classical authors at the end., principally adapted for the service of the Honourable East India company by John Richardson. |
