Show moreby Kohn Francis Gemelli Careri ; witten originally in Italian, translated into English. A voyage round the World by Dr. John Francis Gemelli Careri in six parts, viz. I. of Turky. II. of Persia. III. of India. IV. of China. V. of the Philippine Islands. VI. of New Spain. Folio [2], 605 pp. double column text, 10 steel engraved plates, one of which torn without loss, some are folding + 4 steel engraved illustrations in text, rebacked retaining original boards with new spine, (lack title-page), full calf, edges rubbed & repaired, A & J Churchill, London,1704. This is vol. 4 of Churchill›s “A Collection of Voyages and Travels”, first published in 1704 in 4 volumes, reissued in 1744, with two more volumes of new travels being added in 1745: the volume is complete in itself. Giovanni Francesco Gemelli Careri was a seventeenth- century Italian adventurer and traveller. He was among the first Europeans to tour the world by securing passage on ships involved in the carrying trade; his travels, undertaken for pleasure rather than profit, may have inspired “Around the World in Eighty Days”. Some suspected him of spying for the Vatican on his journeys. Gemelli Careri realised that he could finance his trip by carefully purchasing goods at each stage that would have enhanced value at the next stage: at Bandar-Abbas on the Gulf, he asserts, the traveller should pick up «dates, wine, spirits, and all the fruits of Persia, which one carries to India either dried or pickled in vinegar, on which one makes a good profit». Gemelli Careri started his world trip in 1693, with a visit to Egypt, Constantinople, and the Holy Land. After crossing Armenia and Persia, he visited southern India and entered China. From Macau, Gemelli Careri sailed to the Philippines where he stayed two months while waiting for the departure of the Manila galleon. Show moreWorld map from the 1840 General Atlas of the World published by Adam & Charles Black. The map is a good reflection of contemporary cartographic knowledge of the world. At this time the coastlines of the world with the exception of the polar regions had largely been explored. For this reason depiction of the polar regions are absent for the Antarctic and mostly unfinished in the case of the Arctic. The interiors of central Asia, South America, the western United States, Australia, and especially Africa are largely speculative. The continents are outlined in different colors. Later editions of this map in Blacks General Atlas used solid colors to define the continents. This map was engraved by George Aikman who also produced the illustrations for the 7th edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica also published by A & C Black. Publisher: Best known for publishing Whos Who and the seventh edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica, the Edinburgh based firm of Adam & Charles Black was founded in 1807 and also published a series of popular travel guides (Blacks Guides) as well as the General Atlas of the World from 1840-1898 for which this map was made. engd. by G.
