Show moreVintage poster issued by the Commité des Fêtes Alger (Algiers Festival Committee) to promote the 1907-1908 festival season in Algiers. The poster depicts a Moorish woman holding a French flag in front of the port of Algiers and it lists the attractions for the months from December to May. Title and date from item. The poster is signed "E. Dinet"; inscribed "Imp. Marseillaise. Marseille" and "Pour tous renseignements sur Fêtes s'adresser au Comité des Fêtes. Distractions, Conditions de Séjour etc. Rue de Strasbourg. Alger" (For All Information on the Festivals Please Reach out the Festival Committee. For Distractions and Conditions of Stay Please Visit Rue de Strasbourg, Algiers". The poster has a poster tax stamp "Republique Française 20c et 2/10 ", a stamp of the Commité des Fêtes d'Alger dated April 1907 and the stamp of the Advertising Committee of the French railway company "Compagnie des chemins de fer de l'Ouest" "Vu bon pour afficher" (Checked Good to Display). At the bottom of the poster also a hamsa with the words "Commerce et Industrie" (Trade and Industry" and the coat of arms of the city of Algiers used during colonial times. Show morePhotograph album complied by a French military officer, possibly a member of the 1st or 10th Zouaves battalion, based in Algeria at the end of the 19th century. The album includes amateur photographs – possibly taken by the compiler himself –, photographs taken by professional studios such as the one of Jean Geiser (active in Algiers at the end of the 19th century), but also postcards and other photomechanical prints taken from books and magazines. Photographs are mainly related to Algeria and include views of Bougie [today Bejaïa], Toudja, Lambessa [today Tazoult-Lambèse], Algiers, the gorges of Palestro [today Lakhdaria], and the Touggourt oasis. Among the subjects of the picture, a carnival parade in Algiers, the Bab El Kantra Bridge in Constantine, a military station in Dirah equipped with a telescope, the Azib of the Ben Ali Cherif family, Bab al-Bahr in Bejaïa, the boulevard Admiral Pierre in Algiers, the summer palace of the Governor General, a zawiya, Roman remains, markets, streets, mills, Ramadan prayers and ports. Also, local people, vendors, family portraits and portraits of Zouaves battalions.The album includes views of cities, monuments and landscapes in France and Italy. Show morePhotographs depict the Dar Hassan Pasha palace, built in 1790 by Dey Mustapha Pacha and temporarily used a Library. The French photographer Camille Silvy had studied law and had become a diplomat. While still a governmental officer, Silvy visited Algeria in 1857 on a commission from the Minister of Public Instruction to draw buildings and scenes to document and promote Colonial Algeria to the French public. After this experience, in 1858 he gave up his career and became a professional photographer.
