Photographs were published for the Arabian American Oil Company (ARAMCO) by the American printing company Edward Stern & Company Inc. and it was commissioned by the American firm Graham Associate for their client, ARAMCO. The portfolio was sent out as a promotional item for Edward Stern & Company Inc.’s Optak printing process., a hybrid variant on collotype printing. This book records his observations, evaluations and conclusions. The book details the social lives, customs and laws of administration of 250 towns and villages that Urqhart visited. Urqhart describes in detail his adventures through a variety of terrains, including watercourses, mountainous regions, and wastelands. Other chapters make military comparisons between Britain and Turkey, and observations about the cultural differences of Turks to Europeans, in particular British citizens. Show morePhotographs showing major sites and geographic features of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria, Egypt, and Palestine. Most of the photographs were taken between 1905 and 1915 by Bernard Moritz, but some also by his Turkish friends, especially for areas where non-muslim were prohibited from going. Pictures depict pilgrims on the Hajj to Mecca, Bedouins, the building of the Hejaz railway between Damascus and the holy cities of Mecca and Medina, Jeddah, Petra, and Mount Sinai. Bernard Moritz was an Arabist and archaeologist. from 1898 to 1911 he was in charge of the Khedival Library and Archive in Cairo. During his stay in Egypt, he made numerous research trips to Sinai and Hejaz. Title and date from item. Photographs are tipped onto 50 card mounts with printed captions, numbered 1-100. Bookplate designed by Julius Diez approximately in 1914 on verso of title; "A. Toluboff" (probably the Russian-born Hollywood art director, 1882-1940), blindstamped. label on recto of title.
