Choronologica et astronomica elementa, e Palatinae bibliothecae veteribus libris versa, expleta, & scholiis expolita. Additus est commentarius ... Autore M. Iacobo Christmanno. Frankfurt, heirs of Andrea Wechel, 1590. 8vo, lea. (bind.) + 1 tit. + 1 + 8 ((epist didicat.) + 4 (epist.) + 2 + 565 + 1 (erratte) + 2 + 2lea. (bind.), woodcut printer's device on title, repeated on verso of final blank, some passages of Greek and Arabic in text; contemporary vellum. First edition of this late sixteenth-century commentary and Latin version of al-Farghani's 'Elements', Kitab al-Jawami, based by the translator, Jacob Christmann, on Jacob Anatoli's Hebrew version of the Arabic text. "The influence of the Elements on medieval Europe is clearly attested by the existence of numerous Latin manuscrips in European libraries. References to it in medieval writers are many, and there is no doubt that it was greatly responsible for spreading knowledge of Ptolemaic astronomy, at least until this role was taken over by Sacrobosco's Sphere. But even then the Elements of Alfraganus continued to be used, and Sacrobosco's Sphere was clearly indebted to it. It was from the Elements (in Gerard's translation) the Dante derived [his] astronomical knowledge" (DSB). Kepler refers several times to Alfraganus, once, for instance, citing his measurement of the circumference of the world (Epitome, Book I, Part I). DSB, 4, 541-545; EI, II, p. 793; Sezgin, VI, 149-51. Carmody p. 116; Houzeau & Lancaster 1115 ("notes precieuses"); IA 103.684; Lalande p. 121; Wightman 157; Zinner 3368. First edition of this commentary (with the text) of Hippocrates' work on insomnia, and on selected passages from the al-Taysir of Abu Marwan ibn Zuhr. Abu Marwan's text is presented in the form of 125 "sentences," adapted from the larger work, followed by commentary. The index of diseases is divided into ailments of the head, throat, stomach, uterus, skin, and also fevers. Giovanni Colle's main claim to fame is to have published the first definite description of a blood transfusion in Methodus facile parandi incunda tuta et nova medicamenta, Venice, 1628 (Garrison-Morton 2011). Colle was professor of medicine in the university of Padua. Bruni Celli 770; Krivatsy 2581; apart from the National Library of Medicine copy (Krivatsy) none is located in NUC. Binding somewhat rubbed; one clasp loosened. From the Ritter Waldauf Library in Hall with their engr. bookplate and stamp. The Imperial Protonotary Florian Waldauf (also: Baldauf; c. 1450-1510; in 1495 countersignatory to the preliminary contract of the Habsburg-Spanish double wedding) and his wife Barbara founded a chapel, a collection of relics, and a ministry for the Hall parish church. As steward of the Waldauf endowment, the City of Hall was responsible for the donations "das alle jar etliche puecher nach anzaigen des predigers zum predigambt gekauft und in der heiligen capellen liberei an ketten gehangen und versorgt werden"; furthermore, the library was directed to acquire books from the estates of religious figures. Contrary to the Waldauf decree, the library was hardly enlarged by systematic purchases, but mainly through the incidental acquisition of books and endowments, primarily from clergymen, monasteries, and schools. The most famous previous owner was Johannes Eck. "After 400 years of existence and only occasional growth, interest in the survival of the Ritter-Waldauf-Bibliothek seemed to dwindle away. In addition, endowment possibilies dropped off completely during the First World War. During the Second World War an unknown number of valuable manuscripts and prints were handed out to private individuals in Hall, in order to secure them from impoundment by the National Socialists. After the War, however, not one of these books was returned" (cf. Hdb. der hist. Buchbestände in Dtl.).
