Volume two, entitled "Particular events, or, The most considerable passages after the war of five years, or thereabout, in the empire of the Great Mogol" has separate pagination and title page with following imprint: London : printed by S.G. for Moses Pitt at the white Hart in Little Britain, 1671. The third part entitled "A letter to the Lord Colbert, of the extent of Indostan, the circulation of gold and silver coming at length to be swallow'd up there as in an abyss, the riches, forces, justice and the principal cause of the decay of the states of Asia" has also separate pagination. The first one is described as Muhammad 'Abd al-'Aziz, son of Amir Awn al Rafiq - Grand Sharif of Mecca between 1882 and 1905 - and three of his nephews. The photographs were probably taken in Mecca in 1885. The child in the bottom-left picture can be identified - as per Snouck Hurgronje Papers at the Leiden University Libraries - as Abdullah bin Al-Hussein, later King of Jordan. The negatives had handwork applied: the original backgrounds have been substituted completely except for the carpet in the upper-right photograph. Title and date from item. Show moreCollection of four full-length seated portraits of sayyids and other distinguished people in Mecca, such as the muezzin and the scribe of the Grand Sharif of Mecca. Both the sayyids hold the hilt of a sheathed scimitar in their left hand, while the muezzin has an umbrella; the scribe is posing with a piece of paper in his left hand while dipping his pen in ink with his right. The photographs were probably taken in Mecca between 1885 and 1887 by Snouck Hurgronje and by the Meccan doctor and photographer al-Sayyid ʻAbd al-Ghaffar (active in 1880s). The negatives had handwork applied: the original backgrounds have been substituted completely except for the carpet in the upper-right photograph. Title and date from item.
