Show moreCollection of photographs of of bronze doors discovered in 1878 in Iraq by Hormuzd Rassam. These remarkable archaeological finds are on display at the British Museum in London, and primarily represent hunting scenes and battles The Balawat Gates were three sets of gates from Balawat or Imgur-Enlil, an ancient outpost of the Assyrian Empire. The greater part of the gates had decayed and deteriorated over time, leaving behind a unique collection of inscribed bronze bands that describe the exploits and lives of the Assyrian Kings. The gates at the British Museum were discovered in 1878 by a local archaeologist Hormuzd Rassam, the first Assyrian archaeologist. By the time of their discovery, the wood had already rotted away and only remnants of the decorated bronze bands remained. The eight bands on each door would have been over 285 feet long in total and they decorated and strengthened the outer face and the door post. The other set of the gates is in the Mosul Museum. Small sections of the Shalmaneser bronze door bands are also at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore and in the Istanbul Archaeological Museums. translated by Theo G. Pinches. Show morePasini was one of the most highly acclaimed orientalist painters working in Paris in the second half of the Nineteenth century. In 1855 the opportunity to travel to Arabia arose. At the height of the Crimean war, in an effort to counteract Russian influence in Persia, the diplomat Prosper Bourré led an official French mission to the court of Nasser al-Din Shah in Tehran. The written account was to be prepared by Joseph-Arthur, Comte de Gobineau (1816-1882); Pasini was invited on the journey to make the visual record. The mission crossed to Alexandria from Marseilles and embarked at Suez on the East Indiaman Victoria bound for Bushire. They put in at Jeddah (where they met Kemal Pasha, Guardian of the Holy Shrines at Mecca and Medina), then Aden, and Muscat (where they had an audience with the Sultan, Syed Said), before crossing the Gulf. From Bushire they travelled north to Shiraz, Isfahan, and Tehran. Pasini remained at the Shah's court, before returning to Paris in 1856. In 1859 Pasini published this album as pictorial record of the mission. Gobineau published his written account in the same year: Trois ans en Asie, de 1855 à 1858 (Paris: 1859. 8vo). Show moreCollection of photographs probably produced by a military officer employed in a signal unit of the French Army, at the time of the French Mandate over Syria and Lebanon (1920-1946). The majority of the photographs (four albums) were taken in Lebanon, both in Beirut and in other smaller centres such as the Druze towns of Aley and Souk El Gharb, Khalde, Harissa. Pictures in Lebanon consists of general views and street scenes, but also train and radio stations as well as the reception of General Gouraud (d. 1946), the commander of the French Army of the Levant, in Beirut. One of the albums is dedicated to the ruins of Baalbek and to the coastal cities of Sidon and Tyre. Another album consists of pictures of Aleppo, showing the Citadel (Qal'at Halab), Bab al-Faraj Clock Tower and some Ayubbid (r. 1171–1260 CE) and Mamluks (r. 1260-1516 CE) minarets such as the one of the Mosque of Dabbagha (جامع الدباغة) and the one of Al-Tawashi Mosque (جامع الطواشي). One album is then dedicated to Jerusalem and Palestine and subjects are mainly holy sites. The last album house pictures of the Museum of Alexandria, a few views of Cairo and the pyramids and photographs of Izmir, Antalya and Istanbul. The group of loose prints consists of copies of images of the album, with the exception of a small group that was produced by the studio Pinson et Guelpa in Vichy and somehow related to the Association des ouvriers en instruments de précision (Precision Instruments Workers' Association) or AOIP. Pictures show electromechanical switching panels and personnel working in a telephone exchange office. One of them resembles the photographic portrait - the only one of the collection of a younger soldier smoking hookah, who is likely to be the author of the collection.
