The first one is described as Muhammad 'Abd al-'Aziz, son of Amir Awn al Rafiq - Grand Sharif of Mecca between 1882 and 1905 - and three of his nephews. The photographs were probably taken in Mecca in 1885. The child in the bottom-left picture can be identified - as per Snouck Hurgronje Papers at the Leiden University Libraries - as Abdullah bin Al-Hussein, later King of Jordan. The doctor - who is likely to be the Meccan physician and photographer al-Sayyid ʻAbd al-Ghaffar (active in 1880s) - and his son hold an umbrella and sit on a wooden chair, while the sayyid - identified as Abd al-Qadir al-Shaybi - holds a misbaha (prayer beads) and is posing on an upholstered seat with bolster cushions on either side of him. The two Banu Shaybah boys - identified as the sons of Abd al-Qadir al-Shaybi - stand side-by-side with matching robes embroidered at the lapels. Ottoman soldiers, wearing fezzes stand in front. Several figures appear in small groups on the street in the foreground along with three donkeys and one horse.
