Englished from the French originals: with some useful annotations. [M. l'Abbe Boulet]. First ed. pub. in 1735 under title: A voyage to Barbary, for the redemption of captives. According to the Bodleian Library record, this is a translation by Joseph Morgan of Philémon de la Motte's 'Voyage pour la redemption des captifs aux royaumes d'Alger et de Tunis', which was first published in English in the same year as 'Voyage to Algiers and Tunis, for the redemption of captives'. However, other libraries attribute the work to Jean de La Faye. Title page in red and black. Errata appears at end of contents. Woodcut head- and tail-pieces and initial letters. Show moreTitle in red and black with attractive woodcut depicting the beheading of Saint Symphorian, with Champier and his wife nkeeling before the martyr in prayer; final four leaves of index (and blank) bound at the beginning; with all the blanks; a fine copy, in contemporary blind tooled calf, bookplate of J. Renard on front paste-down. First edition of one of the rarest of Champier's early medical works, published between 1509 and 1515 in Lyons and unknown to Allut (Etude Biographique & Bibliographique sur Symphorien Champier, Lyons, 1859). Champier, physician, surgeon, humanist and chronicler, wrote many and various books, amongst them the first important history of medicine, De medicinae claris scriptoribus in quinque partibus tractatus (Lyons, 1506).
