First German edition, first published from the author's posthumous papers in Paris in 1717. D'Arvieux (1635-1702) lived in the Levant for a long time, spending six years at Aleppo as French consul, and collected these important observations on the Arabic Bedouins of the area. "His observations, which departed greatly from what had been formerly reported about the Bedouins, were received with doubt, but were confirmed by later travellers such as Niebuhr" (cf. Henze I, 101). The plates show costumes and the Bedouin camp on Mt. Carmel. - Some offsetting to text; insignificant browning; slight waterstain near end. Author and bibliographical note supplied in ink at upper edge of t. p. Bound with: Reise nach dem glucklichen Arabien. Translation of: Voyage fait par ordre du roy Louis XIV dans la Palestine. First edition of the Ecchelensis translations of both works, the first published version of Books V - VII of Apollonius's Conics, which only survive in the Arabic version of Abu 'l-Fath al-Isfahani, based on the translation of Thabit ibn Qurra. Apollonius introduced the terms ellipse, parabola and hyperbola. The first four books of the Conics "probably contain little that was not alreay known ... Books V - VII seen to contain the discoveries which he himself had made" (Smith, History of mathematics, I, p. 117). These books were presumed lost (the eighth is still lost) until Borelli discovered an Arabic manuscript in the Medici library in Florence. Abraham Ecchelensis was a Maronite, born in Syria, who died in Rome 1664. He was professor of Arabic and Syriac in Rome and Paris. The Archimedes was translated from another Arabic manuscript in the Medici library, a translation from the Greek by Thabit ibn Qurra: as with the Apollonius, the Greek original of this text does not survive. For Apollonius see Sezgin, V, pp. 139-43; for Thabit ibn Qurra see Seagin, V. pp. 264-274. Norman 58; Riccardi I, 158, 5 ("Bella edizione, ed assai ricercata"). Englished from the French originals: with some useful annotations. [M. l'Abbe Boulet]. First ed. pub. in 1735 under title: A voyage to Barbary, for the redemption of captives. According to the Bodleian Library record, this is a translation by Joseph Morgan of Philémon de la Motte's 'Voyage pour la redemption des captifs aux royaumes d'Alger et de Tunis', which was first published in English in the same year as 'Voyage to Algiers and Tunis, for the redemption of captives'. However, other libraries attribute the work to Jean de La Faye. Title page in red and black. Errata appears at end of contents. Woodcut head- and tail-pieces and initial letters.
