Show moreTravel poster by Guy Georget advertising Air France flights to the Near and Middle. The painting depicts an Arab character and some stylized details recalling the exotic imaginary related to the Arabian Peninsula and the Arab world, namely a minaret, a dome, a dallah (the traditional Arab coffee pot) and an oil tower. The white outline around the image makes it appear almost like a collage. Guy Georget worked extensively with tourism boards to produce posters promoting travel and tourism. His first commercial posters appear in the late 1940s and from the 1960s he worked for Air France, prestigious employment for graphic artists of the time. His style is characterized by graphism with bolder lines and brighter colors. He was strongly influenced by Cubism. Title from item, date devised by Library Staff. The poster was issued when Egypt was part of the United Arab Republic (U.A.R.), the political union between Egypt and Syria which lasted from 1958 until 1961. "Son et lumière", in English "sound-and-light show" was a nighttime entertainment conceived by Paul Robert-Houdin, curator of the Château de Chambord on the Cosson River, France, where the first one was presented in 1952. Multicoloured lights of changing intensity were directed against the facade of a historic building or ruin. The changes of light are synchronized with a sound track (relayed through loudspeakers) carrying music and the dramatized story of the site. Usually, no live participants appear. The first African production took place at Cairo, Egypt, at the Pyramids of Giza, in 1961. Title and date from item. Iscribed: "Issued by the Tourist Administration Office - Cairo".
