A portion of it was demolished during the French Mandate while the wide street in front of it was created according to the traditional urban fabric. This khan is one of the largest ones in Aleppo. It follows a traditional plan with merchant's storage areas and stores wrapping the courtyard's perimeter, and sleeping quarters for travelers on the second story. Show moreThe Halawiyya Madrasa sits on the site of Aleppo's great Byzantine cathedral, which dated to the fifth century AD. The cathedral was converted to a mosque in 1124. The Masjid al-Sarrajin, as it had been called - was soon after converted to a madrasa, located immediately west of the Umayyad Mosque of Aleppo.
