This view of Mecca appeared as plate VII (numbered here top right) in Book Three of the work, devoted to Arab, Turkish, Persian, Chinese and Japanese monuments. The view is accompanied by a caption in German and French, with numerous locations identified by a key, which recites: Prospect view of a part of the large city of Mecca, with its celebrated holy places, where according to the Mohammedans, was the location of the House of Abraham and the fountain of Ishmael; eventually where Mohammed wrote the Koran: This place is visited each year by caravans of Turks. The three servants depicted in the picture are the so-called aghas, the Abyssinian guardians of the Prophet's Mosque; aghas were responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the holy mosques and they also guarded the Prophet ’s tomb. Two aghas sit to the left and right of the seated shaykh, while the third servant stands behind him. All of them are looking into the camera.
