Show moreStreet view depicting the main guardhouse or police station in Mecca, described as being built by Osman Pasha, Hejaz military commander and governor (r. 1882-1886). The building features the Ottoman star and crescent symbols on the cornice and what appears to be a royal tughra (calligraphic monogram) at the center of the pediment. Ottoman soldiers, wearing fezzes stand in front. Several figures appear in small groups on the street in the foreground along with three donkeys and one horse. The plate was probably based on a photograph by the Egyptian army engineer Muhammad Sadiq Bey (1832 – 1902) in 1885. Title and date from item. Plate no. 6 in Bilder-Atlas zu Mekka (Haag : Martinus Nijhoff, 1888-1889). The plate is numbered (VI) and titled in German under the image. Show moreBab al-Asbat, also known as St. Stephen's and Lion Gate from the outside wall. A pair of lions are carved in profile facing each other on either side of the gateway. Bab al-Asbat is dated by a carved inscription on the inside wall of the southern façade. The inscription indicates that the gateway was erected by order of Sultan Sulayman the Magnificent (r. 1520-66) in AH 954 (1538–9 CE). Title from item, date devised from Library staff. Show moreFreya Stark was an Anglo-Italian explorer and travel writer. Her father was British. She wrote more than two dozen books on her travels in the Middle East and Afghanistan. She was one of the first non-Arabs to travel through the southern Arabian Desert. In 1934, Stark sailed down the Red Sea to Aden intending to trace the frankincense route of the Hadhramaut, the hinterland of southern Arabia. She published her account of the region in three books, The Southern Gates of Arabia: A Journey in the Hadhramaut (1936), Seen In The Hadhramaut (1938) and A Winter in Arabia (1940).
