Show moreThe photograph depicts the Sultan in a typical portrait pose. He arrived in France in 1912 in Marseille and the event received great attention by the press. Portraits and interviews of the Sultan appeared in French and International Newspapers, such as La Esfera and The New York Times. In fact, it was after his abdication and with the sign of the Treaty of Fez on 30 March 1912 that Morocco became a French protectorate. Many photographers, like the Spanish José Demaria Vázquez Campua in Madrid and the Parisian Eugène Le Deley (E. L. D.), produced postcards with portraits of the Sultan in traditional costumes during his public appearances. These documents reported that the Sultan repeatedly visited Vichy to receive thermal treatments. The present portrait was probably taken in one of these occasions. Title devised by Library staff, date from item. The photograph is signed "J. Giry. Rue de Nimes 145 Vichy" on the mount and has an autograph dated dedication in Arabic "1914 تذكار منا للشعبور لويز كنب من مقامة معنا" by Abd al-Hafid.
