The second edition (first 1546) of Abu Ali al-Khayyat's Kitab al-Mawalid as translated to Latin by Johannes Hispalensis (John of Seville). "[The author's] fame in mediaeval Europe stems from the K. al-Mawalid, a work on judicial astrology which also contains horoscopes for illness, frequent citations from Ptolemy and Hermes on the pars fortunae, etc. Two Latin translations were made of it, one by Plato of Tivoli (Plate Tiburtinus) at Barcelona in 1136, and the other by Seville in 1153; the latter translation was printed in Nuremberg (1546, 1549)" (EI) The translator, Johannes Hispalensis, was "the chief and most voluminous translator of astrological works from Arabic into Latin in the twelfth century. [His trnaslations] remained in use during the later middle ages and many of them appeared in print in early editions" (Thorndike, II, p. 73). Joachim Heller was a leading member of the circle of the celebrated Humanist and Reformer Philip Melanchthon, to whom the preface of this edition is Albohali is addressed. The penultimate incunable edition of what "remained for centuries the standard text-book of pharmacy in the West" (Sarton), with the commentary of Mondino, the great anatomist, and other texts including Abulcasis' Liber servitoris. Mesue "was for centuries the authority on the composition of medicaments. The book was not only in use in practically every European pharmacy but in addition became the basis of the later official pharmacopoeias. The Grabadin [or Antidotarium, contained here] is, as Sudhoff calls it, 'the pharmacological quintessence of Arabian therapeutics' and contains the entire armamentarium of compounded medicines which we owe to the Arabians. The arrangement is like that of the later pharmacopoeias. The compounded medicines are divided into groups according to their forms - confections, juleps, syrups, etc. - the monographs containing directions for the preparation of the respective products and also notes on their medical uses" (Edward Kremers and George Urdang, History of Pharmacy, 1940, p. 21). Abu Musa Jabir ibn Hayyan (known as "Geber" in the Latin tradition) is the name of an author whose historical existence is under debate, but who, according to Arabic culture, is said to have lived in the second half of the eight century, been the head of a hermetic school, and left an extensive body of works on natural philosophy and alchemy. The rediscovery of Geber for the history of chemistry and alchemy, was introduced by Hermann Kopp in the 19th century. The first German edition, published in Vienna in 1751, was entitled "Geberi des Königes der Araber [...] vollständige Chymische Schriften, worinnen in den vier Büchern das Quecksilber, Schwefel, Arsen inn Gold, Silber, Bley, Zinn, Kupfer, Eisen & Oefen [..], Destillationen [...], Essenzen, Salze, Alaune [...], Cinnober, Glaß, Boras, Essig &c. abgehandelt werden; wie auch das Testament, Güldene Buch der dreyen Wörter Kallid Rachaidibi, und andere Chymische Tractätgen, Summa, die ganze Kunst die unvollkommenen Metalle [...] in Vollkommene, als Silber und Gold zu verwandeln; das ist: wie man Silber und Gold machen soll, enthalten [...]". - Publisher's printed dedication to Caspar Richter ("Polonixe Secretario").
