First edition of Alpago's translation (De anima had only once appeared separately before, at Pavia in 1484, in the translation of Johannes Hispalensis and Domingo Gundisalvo). Alpago made his name through his translations of Avicenna. His eminent version of the Canon went through numerous editions, but this book and his other trnaslations appeared in one edition only. "Avicenna insisted on the Soul's individual immortality. To begin with, he held that the immaterial is incorruptible. Moreover he was convinced not only of the soul's immateriality but also of his individuality. He argued for both these points simultaneously: Wehen one refers to himself as 'I', this cannot be a reference to his body. If a man were to come into being fully mature and rational but suspended in space so that he was totally unaware of his physical circumstances, he would still be certain of one thing - his own existence as an individual self" (The encyclopedia of philosophy Die Vorlage enth. insgesamt ... Show moreThis volume collects several woks on medecine, being the first that of 'Abu Zakariyya' Yuhanna Ibn Masawayh, known as Mesue Yuhanna Ibn Masawayh (C.777-857), one of the great name of Islamic medicine. He was personal physician to the abbasid Caliphs al-Ma'mun, al-Mutasim, al-Wathiq and al-Mutawakkil, and spent most of his life in baghdad and Samarra. He contributed to the translating activities of the famous Bayt al-Hikma; and Hunayn ibn Ishaq, the most influential of the traslators of Greek scientific texts, was his pupil. Despite his distinction, much of Ibn Masawayh's writing has not reached us. Just a handful of his text are extant in Arabic. More has been preserved in Latin Translation, though the attribution of some text to an elder as opposed to a younger Mesue has given the false impression thar there was more than one Ibn Masawayh. It is followed by a well-known work by Francisco de Pedemontium and the Antidotarium of Nicolaus Salernitarum. The last work on medecine is from Abulkasim. Antidotarium Nicolai. In 1697 Seutter began his studies in Nuremberg and subsequently worked in the publishing house of Jeremias Wolff in Augsburg. In 1710, he established his own publishing house and print shop. The Seutter publishing house produced a great number of maps, atlases and globes. However, very few original maps were printed there as Augsburg at that time had no university and no connection to the fields of mathematics or the natural sciences. Seutter therefore copied the work of other cartographers, making his own engravings based on their models, with over 500 maps produced in his studio. Seutter's most well-known works are the 1725 "Geographical Atlas or an Accurate Depiction of the Whole World" ("Atlas Geographicus oder Accurate Vorstellung der ganzen Welt") with 46 maps, the 1734 "Large Atlas" ("Grosser Atlas") with 131 maps, and the 1744 pocket atlas "Small Atlas" ("Atlas minor") with 64 maps. Matthäus Seutter died in 1756 and his son Albrecht Karl, his son-in-law, conrad Tobias Lotter, and his business partner, Johann Michael Probst, ran the printing business for five more years.
