Show moreA large scale topographic map of Matrah and Maskat (modern Muttrah and Muscat) made by F.S. Weller, a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society to accompany a paper by Captain Arthur William Stiffe. Stiffe was the co-author of the famous "Persian Gulf Pilot" books for navigating the Gulf. Topography is indicated by contour lines though no information as to their height is given. Settled areas are indicated by grey shading. The photograph is probably part of the same shooting of the very famous picture taken on 15 February 1921 on the occasion of the Cairo Conference, showing among others Winston and Clementine Churchill, T.E.Lawrence, and Gertrude Bell on camels in front of the Sphinx.
