The map Persia extending from the Eastern Mediterranean to Tacalistan and the Indus River with the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf in the South and Caspian and Tartaria in the North. The focus on the map is on Persia, but includes areas of present day Iran, Iraq, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Oman, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait. Hundreds of towns and cities are noted as well as rivers, lakes, and mountain ranges. This map in the upper left corner shows Peñón de Vélez de la Gomera. The map was published in the so called "Mercator-Hondius Atlas" by Jodocus Hondius and based upon a map by Gerhard Mercator. The engraver Pieter van der Keere was a Dutch engraver, publisher and globe maker. Hondius republished in the "Mercator-Hondius Atlas", that is now known as one of the most famous atlases from the early 17th century. The Mercator's maps were re-engraved by van der Keere in his distinguished style. Copper engraving. Relief shown pictorially. The penultimate incunable edition of what "remained for centuries the standard text-book of pharmacy in the West" (Sarton), with the commentary of Mondino, the great anatomist, and other texts including Abulcasis' Liber servitoris. Mesue "was for centuries the authority on the composition of medicaments. The book was not only in use in practically every European pharmacy but in addition became the basis of the later official pharmacopoeias. The Grabadin [or Antidotarium, contained here] is, as Sudhoff calls it, 'the pharmacological quintessence of Arabian therapeutics' and contains the entire armamentarium of compounded medicines which we owe to the Arabians. The arrangement is like that of the later pharmacopoeias. The compounded medicines are divided into groups according to their forms - confections, juleps, syrups, etc. - the monographs containing directions for the preparation of the respective products and also notes on their medical uses" (Edward Kremers and George Urdang, History of Pharmacy, 1940, p. 21). Show moreJodocus Hondius was a Flemish Dutch cartographer and publisher of maps and a central figure in the golden age of Dutch cartography. He was responsible for publishing the maps of Gerhard Mercator, the single most important cartographer of the age of discovery. The map depicts the realm of the legendary Christian Emperor Prester John in Abyssinia, an object of much speculation in the middle ages up to the early modern period. The map abounds in the fantasies of the time about the interior of Africa, in addition to Prester John there are the lands of the Amazons throughout the southern regions, a nearby lake named Zaire is inhabited by Tritons and Sirens and cannibals threaten the then recently Christianized kingdom of the Congo on the Atlantic coast of Africa, here called the Ethiopian Ocean (Oceanus Aethiopicus) and is shown in more detail in the inset map (possibly derived from Filippo Pigafettas map of the Congo itself derived from the reports of the Portuguese explorer Duarte Lopez). The map also depicts part of Arabia, up to Jeddah on the Red Sea, including Mecca to the north, the area of the Straits of Bab el-Mandeb and along the coast of Yemen up to the area of Dhofar in present day Oman. The modern day Gulf of Aden is here named the Arabian Gulf (Sinus Arabicus). Distances are given in German miles and Spanish leagues. This is a beautiful engraved map of Eastern Africa showing the legendary Kingdom of Prester John, who is said that he was ready to help the Crusaders in their campaign against Muslims. An interesting mistake depicting the deformation of lake Tanganyika and lake Victoria Being very small. The number of rivers is exegerrated. Show moreAbraham Ortelius (1527-1598) was a Flemish cartographer and central figure at the pinnacle of Dutch cartographic science during the Age of Discovery. He was famously the first to publish a printed collection of maps with the title of atlas. A very colorful map with a lot of detail and great deal of text depicting the land of Tartary which was the medieval name for north and central Asia from the Caspian Sea to the Pacifica Ocean.
