This view of Mecca appeared as plate VII (numbered here top right) in Book Three of the work, devoted to Arab, Turkish, Persian, Chinese and Japanese monuments. The view is accompanied by a caption in German and French, with numerous locations identified by a key, which recites: Prospect view of a part of the large city of Mecca, with its celebrated holy places, where according to the Mohammedans, was the location of the House of Abraham and the fountain of Ishmael; eventually where Mohammed wrote the Koran: This place is visited each year by caravans of Turks.
