Show moreThe album collects views of Egypt, landscapes, village scenes, antiquities, and portraits. Photographs include views of canals and bridges along the Nile, sugarcane harvest, markets, palm groves, Ismail Pasha's palace, temples, sugar factories, mosques, cemeteries, and boats. Pictures show also local people such as farmers, sellers, hairdressers. The album includes group portraits of the owner of the album during visits to temples and tennis clubs. Places mentioned include Nag Hammadi, Abydos, Luxor, Cairo, Al Hawamdia, and Asyut. Some of the pictures, essentially the ones captioned in the negatives, were taken by professional photographers, whereas those without captions were probably done by an amateur, presumably the owner of the album, a Dutch officer. It was during the reign of Ismail Pasha, in 1900 that the first sugar factory started in Upper Egypt. The Dutch officer might have been involved in the sugarcane manufacturing expansion.
