Show moreCollection documenting the 1911-1913 expeditions in Syria and south-eastern Anatolia of the German archaeologist and diplomat Max Freiherr von Oppenheim. The photographs were taken by the official members of the expedition, including his photographer Dr. Oswald Seemann, a physician by training, and Felix Langenegger, an engineer and long-time associate of Oppenheim. Most of the photographs show architectural subjects taken in wide variety of cities and archaeological sites, ranging from Aleppo to Mardin to Urfa. The present collection was probably assembled and retained by a member of Oppenheim's party, perhaps even Langenegger, or someone in his circle. Title and date devised by Library staff. Some photographs have contemporary pencil annotations on the verso, and some paper mounts come with pencil annotations. Photograph is the right center section of a four part panorama which includes Plates II, III, and V. The photograph was taken the Meccan doctor and photographer al-Sayyid ʻAbd al-Ghaffar (active in 1880s) between 1886 and 1887. Title from caption list in original portfolio. Date from original item. Plate no. 4 in Bilder aus Mekka (Leiden : E. J. Brill, 1889). The plate is numbered (IV). First German edition, first published from the author's posthumous papers in Paris in 1717. D'Arvieux (1635-1702) lived in the Levant for a long time, spending six years at Aleppo as French consul, and collected these important observations on the Arabic Bedouins of the area. "His observations, which departed greatly from what had been formerly reported about the Bedouins, were received with doubt, but were confirmed by later travellers such as Niebuhr" (cf. Henze I, 101). The plates show costumes and the Bedouin camp on Mt. Carmel. - Some offsetting to text; insignificant browning; slight waterstain near end.
