Show morePhotograph showing the riding camel, commonly known as hajin, of sharif Yahya, son of sharif Ahmad, himself the son of ibn ʻAbd al-Muttalib ibn Ghalib (1790 - 1886), who served three times as Grand Sharif of Mecca - first in 1827, then 1851 to 1856, and finally from 1880 to 1881). Sharif Yahya is accompanied by a slave and two other sharifs. The photograph was taken in Mecca by the Meccan doctor and photographer al-Sayyid ʻAbd al-Ghaffar (active in 1880s) between 1886 and 1887. Title (partial) from caption list in portfolio. Show moreCollection of four portraits of children in ceremonial robes. The first one is described as Muhammad 'Abd al-'Aziz, son of Amir Awn al Rafiq - Grand Sharif of Mecca between 1882 and 1905 - and three of his nephews. The photographs were probably taken in Mecca in 1885. The child in the bottom-left picture can be identified - as per Snouck Hurgronje Papers at the Leiden University Libraries - as Abdullah bin Al-Hussein, later King of Jordan. The negatives had handwork applied: the original backgrounds have been substituted completely except for the carpet in the upper-right photograph. Title and date from item. Show moreCollection of four full-length seated portrait of distinguished people, such as a man from Mecca - identified as Daud ibn Sulaiman Abu al-Faraj -, muezzins - one of them described as a senior muezzin member of the dynasty descendant of Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr, the first Muslim born at Medina after the hijra - and traders from Mecca and Jeddah. Photographs were probably taken in Mecca between 1884 and 1887 by Snouck Hurgronje and by the Meccan doctor and photographer al-Sayyid ʻAbd al-Ghaffar (active in 1880s).
