Floriano interpr. First Latin edition of this celebrated work on African geography by the Islamic scholar Hasan ben Muhamed el-Wazzan-ez-Zayyati (1485-1552), better known under his Latin name Johannes Leo Africanus. His work long remained the principal source of information on the geography of Africa in general and the Sudan in particular. It is assumed that Leo wrote his description of Africa directly in Italian, though he certainly relied also on Arabic notes, some of which he might have composed while travelling in Northern Africa. The original Italian edition appeared in the famous series Navigationi et Viaggi, published at Venice in 1550 by Giovanni Battista Ramusio. The work was soon translated into Latin, French (1556), English (1600), and Dutch (1665). The present Latin edition of 1556, prepared by Johannes Florianus, rector of a grammar school in Antwerp, was widely used by European scholars until the late 19th century. - Some faint browning and foxing at places, ties lacking. First edition of Alpago's translation (De anima had only once appeared separately before, at Pavia in 1484, in the translation of Johannes Hispalensis and Domingo Gundisalvo). Alpago made his name through his translations of Avicenna. His eminent version of the Canon went through numerous editions, but this book and his other trnaslations appeared in one edition only. "Avicenna insisted on the Soul's individual immortality. To begin with, he held that the immaterial is incorruptible. Moreover he was convinced not only of the soul's immateriality but also of his individuality. He argued for both these points simultaneously: Wehen one refers to himself as 'I', this cannot be a reference to his body. 'Abu Zakariyya' Yuhanna Inb Masawaykh known as Mesue Yuhanna Ibn Masawayh (C.777-857) is one of the great name of islamic medicine. he was personal physician to the abbasid Caliphs al-Ma'mun. al-Mutasim, al-Wathiq and al-Mutawakkil, and spent most of his life in baghdad and Samarra. He contributed to the translating activities of the famous bayt al-hikma; and hunayn ibn Ishaq, the most influential of the traslators of Greek scientific texts, was his pupil. Despite his distinction, much of Ibn Masawayh's writing has not reached us. Just a handful of his text are extant in Arabic. more has been Preserved in Latin Translation, though the attribution of some text to an elder as opposed to a younger Mesue has given the false impression thar there was more than one Ibn Masawayh.
