Show moreThe name of the Shaykh is indicated only in the French version of the title. The three servants depicted in the picture are the so-called aghas, the Abyssinian guardians of the Prophet's Mosque; aghas were responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the holy mosques and they also guarded the Prophet ’s tomb. Two aghas sit to the left and right of the seated shaykh, while the third servant stands behind him. All of them are looking into the camera. The photograph was taken indoor, against a blank white backdrop and it recalls classical late 19th-century studio portraits. Date and title from item.
