Show moreThis largely descriptive account of the travels of John Hanning Speke (4 May 1827 – 15 September 1864) records two expeditions to Africa made in search of the source of the Nile. Speke was a Captain in the British Indian Army who made three expeditions to Africa and who is famed for being the first European to visit Lake Victoria and the man who discovered the source of the Nile. The book originally appeared in serial form in Blackwood’s Magazine, and here comprises 5 chapters detailing Speke’s adventures in the land of the Somali, and 5 chapters concerning his journey on Lake Tanganyika. The chapters, derived from Speke’s journal, give detailed accounts of his encounters with hostile tribes and the difficulties which he experienced in reaching the Victoria N’yanza, the source of the Nile. The final chapter offers observations on the geology of the terrain, advice to missionaries, and notes concerning the return of the expedition.
