    <abstract type="Subject">During World War I, Saud (r. 1908–1920) was allied with the Ottoman Empire, which supplied the Rashidis with weapons and troops to fight against Ibn Saud, the founder and first king of Saudi Arabia. After the Ottoman defeat in World War I, Saud ibn Abdulaziz Al Rashid attempted to gain favor with the British. Lieutenant Roberts, serving as an Assistant British Political Officer in Zubayr, was tasked with conveying his views to Baghdad.</abstract>
