The celebrated Flemish cartographer Gerard Mercatorrendition of Ptolemys map of Arabia based on his important Geographia. The map, a copperplate engraving, shows the entirety of the Arabian Peninsula and parts of Africa and Persia. Details of the topography of the interior are almost completely fanciful though the place names having been based upon reports of travelers and traders are of great historical interest. Among these place names is Qatar given as Catara.
