Photograph showing the French Residency and the Soleillet tower before it was damaged by a major storm in June 1885. The tower was built in 1882 by Paul Soleillet, a French explorer, colonial administrator and trader who had been hired to open a trading post at Obock in the early 1880s. The tower was rebuilt soon after it was severely damaged by a storm 1 June 1885. It served both as an observation post and a shelter in case of attacks. The Soleillet trading post was used a penitentiary for a few years after Soleillet's death in 1885., Title from item, date devised by Library staff., Main Heritage Compact General, HC.HP.2013.0005-0004, 2-D Graphic, Item-ID: i26366848, BIB-ID: 2815093 |
