Item. Full-length seated portrait of ten Muslim pilgrims from Martapura in Indonesia in the island of Borneo. They squat face forward, looking towards the camera. The photograph was taken by Snouck Hurgronje in Jeddah between 1884 and 1885. The men are photographed in a courtyard-like space with plants – some in wide wooden pots – foliage and a window, fronted by bars, visible in the background. The negatives had handwork applied. No Known Copyright Title and date from item. Plate no. 29 in Bilder-Atlas zu Mekka (Haag : Martinus Nijhoff, 1888-1889). The plate is numbered (XXIX) and titled in German under the image.
