Full-length seated portrait of four Muslim pilgrims from Palembang, the capital city of South Sumatra province in Indonesia. They squat face forward on the ground, looking towards the camera. The photograph was probably taken by Snouck Hurgronje in Jeddah between 1884 and 1885. The men are photographed in a courtyard-like space with plants – some in wide wooden pots – foliage and a window, fronted by bars, visible in the background. The negative had handwork applied.
