Full-length seated portrait of thirteen Mandailing Muslim pilgrimd from the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. They squat face forward on the ground, looking towards the camera. The photograph was probably taken in Jeddah between 1884 and 1885. The men are photographed in a courtyard-like space with plants – some in wide wooden pots – foliage and a window, fronted by bars, visible in the background.
