Item. Full-length seated portrait of thirteen Mandailing Muslim pilgrimd from the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. They squat face forward on the ground, looking towards the camera. The photograph was probably taken in Jeddah between 1884 and 1885. The men are photographed in a courtyard-like space with plants – some in wide wooden pots – foliage and a window, fronted by bars, visible in the background. The negative had handwork applied. No Known Copyright Title and date from item. Plate 35 in Bilder-Atlas zu Mekka (Haag : Martinus Nijhoff, 1888-1889). The plate is numbered (XXXV) and titled in German under the image.
