Item. Full-length portrait of four Muslim pilgrims from Aceh, in the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. The group faces forward, looking towards the camera. The two men standing behind are described as wakils (representatives). The photograph was probably taken in Jeddah between 1884 and 1885. The men are photographed in a courtyard-like space with plants – some in wide wooden pots – foliage and a window, fronted by bars, visible in the background. The negative had handwork applied. No Known Copyright Title and date from item. Plate no. 36 in Bilder-Atlas zu Mekka (Haag : Martinus Nijhoff, 1888-1889). The plate is numbered (XXXVI) and titled in German under the image.
