Photographs depict the Dar Hassan Pasha palace, built in 1790 by Dey Mustapha Pacha and temporarily used a Library. The French photographer Camille Silvy had studied law and had become a diplomat. While still a governmental officer, Silvy visited Algeria in 1857 on a commission from the Minister of Public Instruction to draw buildings and scenes to document and promote Colonial Algeria to the French public. After this experience, in 1858 he gave up his career and became a professional photographer.
