This map was published Amsterdam 1719, and is a detailed map of the Holy Land based on the cartography of Nicolas Sanson. The region is divided according to the territories allotted to the twelve tribes of Israel. Panels of French text listing the bishoprics of Palestine surround the map; also the map extends from Gaza to Sidon and identifies the 12 Tribes and many other historical features. This map comes from volume V of the Atlas Historique published by Chatelain family between 1705 and 1720, and is based on the map of French catógrafo Guillaume de l'Isle. Louis XIII appointed him "Géographe Ordinaire du Roi". His main work, the Atlas "Cartes Générales de Toutes les Parties du Monde," was issued first in 1654 until 1676. After his death in 1667 the business was continued by his sons Guillaume and Adrien in partnership with A. H. Jaillot. |
