Show more"In the Middle East, perhaps more than anywhere else, politics depends on geography. In the past, the Middle East's fluid natural boundaries, stretching from the low-lying desert plain into three continents, permitted unparalleled expansion of its native empires, and its importance as a crossroads between Africa, Europe, and the Far East increased in each century. Today, there are added factors of significance--primarily, a disproportionate and fabulous wealth in oil and the strategic value of Middle Eastern states, located directly below Soviet territory, but connected to the West through their commerce and, to some extent their past politics and present military alliances. Here is an atlas that provides a precise and cogent summary--in 58 maps and accompanying text--of the basic geographic, national, and cultural factors that distinguish this region today. The authors provide maps and commentary first on the Middle East as a whole--its climate, physical geography, agriculture, political divisions, economics, languages, and religions-- and on significant features ranging from the placement of oil pipelines and refineries to the sources and irrigation basin of the Nile River. They also survey the most important political and religious developments of the past: the expansion and decline of the Ottoman Empire; the spread of the religion of Islam; and imperial colonies, concession, and protectorates from Alexander to World War II. The second half of the atlas contains maps and text on the historical background, geography, economics, and current politics of every country of the Middle East." -- Publisher's description The Middle East as a geographic region.
