Show moreGirault de Prangey's daguerreotypes, taken during his photographic excursion around the eastern Mediterranean in 1842, are the earliest surviving photographs depicting Egypt and the Middle East. Three years later, in 1845, he was back in France with almost one thousand daguerreotypes. Out of these, he considered part of his archaeological fieldwork, he realized the lithographs illustrating the renowned book Monuments arabes d’Égypte, de Syrie et d’Asie mineure, dessinés et mesurés de 1842 à 1845. Show moreCollection of plates from "Monuments arabes d’Égypte, de Syrie et d’Asie-Mineure dessinés et mesurés de 1842 à 1845" (19), printed in Paris by Lemercier for the author and A. Hauser in 1846, and from "Monuments et Paysages de l’Orient" (5), printed in Paris by Lemercier in 1851. In 1842, Girault de Prangey went on a trip to study in the Middle East; his two-year tour led him to Greece, Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine and Egypt. He took daguerreotypes of monuments and landscapes and when he returned to France in 1845 he used some of his plates for the illustrations of the above-mentioned works. Title and date from item. Lithographs are bounded in a half green morocco album with gilt lettering on spine. Size of the sheets and of the lithographs varies.
